HOW WE WORK
PROCESS DOCUMENTATIONReference submission
High-resolution photo, RAW preferred. We reject pixelated or poorly lit reference — quality in determines quality out.
Consultation
In-person or video. We discuss placement, sizing, skin tone variables, and expected long-term shift of black and grey ink.
Deposit + stencil
$200 secures your slot. Custom stencil is prepared in advance — we do not improvise realism.
Execution
Session length varies 4–8 hours for major pieces. We build layers: lightest grays first, deepest blacks last.
Touchup review
Complex realism returns at 4–6 months for shadow deepening and highlight refinement.

TECHNICAL PARAMETERS
REALISM METHODOLOGYRound liners + magnums
Realism demands both — tight round liners for detail work and edges, curved magnums for seamless gradient blending across large gray areas. We don't use tribal or flat techniques.
Black to white, 9 tonal steps
We work a strict tonal palette: pure black anchor, seven intermediate washes, distilled water highlights. No color. Color is a different discipline and we don't pretend otherwise.
Fitzpatrick scale assessment
Realism reads differently across skin tones. We assess Fitzpatrick scale at consultation and adjust tonal compression accordingly. Lighter skin allows wider contrast range; darker skin requires careful highlight management.
UV degrades black and grey
Black ink grays toward middle tones over time. UV exposure accelerates this dramatically. We design with long-term aging in mind — contrast slightly higher at execution, knowing the 10-year pull toward midtone.
THE FLOOR
STATION DOCUMENTATION / STERILE PROTOCOLRealism is a clean discipline. Every station is photographed monthly for our internal log, every autoclave cycle is dated and filed. We don't romanticize the shop floor — we document it.

AFTERCARE PROTOCOL
REQUIRED READING-
Saniderm for 5 days
Realism tattoos have heavy saturation and benefit from extended Saniderm coverage. Keep it sealed for 5 days if the bandage holds.
-
No stretching during heal
Placement matters. Avoid exercises that stretch the tattooed skin for the first 2 weeks—distortion can pull healing ink.
-
Moisturize without shine
Over-moisturizing gives realism tattoos a blurry look during healing. Thin, unscented application once or twice daily.
-
Black and grey needs shade
UV light grays out black ink. Your tattoo will shift with age regardless, but aggressive sun exposure accelerates it dramatically. Always SPF 50+.
-
Healing realism looks rough
Peeling, milky appearance, and color shifting during heal is completely normal. Your tattoo will look different at 3 weeks than at 12 weeks. Trust the process.
-
Second-session touchups
Complex realism often benefits from a second session at 4–6 months to deepen shadows and sharpen highlights. Budget for this.
REQUEST CONSULTATION
NO WALK-INSConsultation protocol
Every piece is pre-planned. Every reference is reviewed. Every session is confirmed in advance.
COMMON QUERIES
-
How much does a realism portrait cost?
Portrait size varies. A palm-sized portrait starts around $800. Full sleeve portraits run $5,000–$12,000. We quote after seeing your reference.
-
Do you only do black and grey?
Yes. Shadow Collective specializes exclusively in black and grey work. For color realism, we can refer you to trusted colleagues.
-
Do you take walk-ins?
No. Realism requires reference review, sizing discussion, and stencil preparation. All appointments are pre-planned consultations.
-
What is the age requirement?
18+ with valid photo ID. No exceptions.
-
Can I tattoo over existing work?
Coverup realism is complex but possible. We'll need to assess your existing tattoo in person—photos are not sufficient for coverup assessment.
-
How do I prepare my reference image?
High-resolution photos in good lighting produce the best results. For portraits, we recommend professional photos or RAW camera files. Pixelated images limit what we can achieve.
